It is with great sadness to inform you that long time ASCLS member Samuel Chafin has passed away. I was just thinking about him after hearing of the death of Leon Headley and wanted to reach out to Sam to make sure that he was OK because I knew that they were good friends. Unfortunately I did not act quickly enough and did not get the chance to have one last chat. Sam was my mentor and friend from the time I was a student and throughout my entire career. He was an advocate for Clinical Laboratory Scientists and served ASCLS with distinction. He served on state boards in California and helped to maintain the respect and professionalism of the Clinical Laboratory Scientist among the other health care professional organizations. He worked tirelessly into his 80s and was 91 when he passed. He had a wonderful life and I will cherish every moment I spent in his company. He can now rest comfortably with his wife Emma. I encourage everyone to reach out and contact a loved one before you miss the opportunity.

Samuel Chafin was known by many ASMT/ASCLS members by our greetings and conversations at the annual meetings. I was one of those who remember our discussions at the annual meetings, my attendance began in 1963 continuing annually until 2017. Another friend and colleague has passed. May Sam Rest In Peace. Condolences to his family and friends.

Leon and Sam - The passing of two great members who will be sorely missed.  Won't be the same not seeing them at our annual meetings.  My sympathies to their families and friends.

I am so sorry to hear of Sam's passing.  My deepest sympathies to his family.  I met Sam years ago at one of our annual meetings and always looked forward to seeing him.  He truly was a model of a professional and his absence will be missed.  It is unfortunate that the younger members will not have the opportunity to have met him and share his wisdom.

So sorry for the loss of Sam and Leon, and my sympathies to their families.  I have fond memories of  our friendly bidding against each other for the Georgia Masters memorabilia at national meetings.  Sam and Leon were very kind men and will be greatly missed.

I am having a hard time imagining a world without Sam and Leon. We can hardly do without the kindness, joy and honest dignity each of them brought to us all. When I had to run the Alpha Mu Tau banquet in LA, Sam was my guy on the site. Together we picked a wonderful sight (actually Sam did all the work . . . . ) and I believe the best event, raising a record amount of $$$ for scholarships to that date followed. I gave him a set of imprinted University of Massachusetts golf balls as part of my thanks for his hard work. He never used them11 I asked him about it every year . . . . .  I will miss you my friend.
