I just read about the new clinical pathology assistant program at UAB and I am curious about how that program differs from the DCLS program. Can someone elucidate that for me? Thank you.

    Hi Linda,

There was a session at this past CLEC that discussed the Clinical Pathology Assistant Program at UAB. It was titled:

Improving Diagnosis in Health Care: Are We Helping Pave the Way?

    Friday, February 22
    4:45 PM–5:45 PM

Unfortunately, I do not have the session handout for this. From what I can remember, they were stating that this was just another viable Master level option with a more focus on a clinical/consultative track rather than the MS in Medical Laboratory Science. The vision here is for these Clinical Pathology Assistants to work with Pathologists and Pathology Assistant as well as other healthcare providers to provide the best overall patient care. The DCLS would then be the next step for someone who has already pursued the MS in CAP. Both of the visions for the CAP and the DCLS are very similar. We are looking to "provide the face" of the laboratory by training to become a part of the Diagnostic Management Teams (DMTs) at healthcare facilities. I hope this helps. Provide someone can elaborate more.

Thanks for the explanations.  This sounds like an exciting option for laboratorians!

Thanks for the explanation. I mentioned this program on this forum  a few weeks ago and no one else had heard about it. I then reached out to a college and she referred me to the program chair. However I did not receive a response. This certainly seems ;like an opportunity for laboratorians. This might also be an opportunity to see if the DCLS  program is a viable option for both the CPA grads and for UAB.

Does this curriculum also prepare the student for participating in the Diagnostic Management Team concept of Dr. Laposata?

Yes, the curriculum is designed to prepare the student for participating in the Diagnostic Management Team concept of Dr. Laposata, among others roles.

The clinical pathology assistant program at UAB is an MS program that we developed to meet an emerging need in the clinical laboratory.  Instead of providing an MS degree that focuses students in one area for advanced learning, we decided to take a more broad approach.  We see this program as an option for MLS graduates with 3-5 years experience to take their education one step further and to provide assistance to pathologists regarding the clinical side of laboratory medicine.  We see this degree program as a stepping stone to a DCLS program.  It has similar educational content, but not at the depth of a DCLS program. I hope that helps and thank you for the question.
