    Hello,

I am interested in potentially establishing my own medical laboratory in the future. I am hoping to meet people in ASCLS who have experience this this enormous task. Has anyone in ASCLS ever achieved this dream or worked with others who have?

Here is one website that I found in my search for relevant information: Starting a Lab - Elite Learning

Hi Genaro - this is an interesting question and I admire your entrepreneurial spirit.  The article you referenced would seem to cover, very generally, the steps needed for the technical aspects of operating a laboratory.  However, this is also a business and the article overlooks those aspects - staff related to business operations, billing, insurance, attorneys, loans, marketing, etc.  The US Small Business Administration runs free classes in many areas on these general aspects of business operation.

About 20 years ago I started an environmental toxicology lab.   At that same time I enrolled in an Executive MBA program at Northern Illinois University, which was very useful in helping me make the right decisions.

    Genaro,

I worked for a start-up company in 2004 and I started up a reference laboratory as the company (PrognostiX, Inc.) was working on 510K clearance for Cardio MPO.  I applied for a CLIA license, wrote all of the procedures, chemical hygiene plan, safety manual, etc., set up the LIS, instruments (ELISA) and helped set up LC/MS/MS. The company switched directions and decided to sell the Myeloperoxidase kit instead (they had a few research clients that were ordering MPO).  A few years later Jake Orville, as CEO bought the assets of PrognostiX including the reference lab that was still active and turned it into Cleveland HeartLab.  This company was very successful with the model Jake built and the company flourished.  in 2018 Cleveland HeartLab was purchased by Quest Diagnostics and they are turning Cleveland HeartLab into their Cardiovascular Center of Excellence and all cardiovascular testing will be done here.  It was an exciting and challenging experience.  Message me if you want to know more.  Lisa Kubit Palanca, MBA, MT (ASCP)
