On Campus Student Organizations

    Hello everyone,
I am the director for University based MLS and MLT programs. Several of my students have expressed interest in participating in a student professional organization and promoting the profession on campus. Are there any student pre-professional organizations or student chapters of ASCLS?? I would love to see my campus students get involved and promote the profession. This would give them an opportunity to possibly fund raise, attend professional meetings and get involved in cross disciplinary research projects.
Thanks in advance for your input.

    Hello Joan,

It is encouraging to hear that your students are interested in getting involved early on! I do not know if there are any student chapters per say within ASCLS; however, ASCLS-Kansas allows Developing Professionals (students) to actively participate in our society where they see fit.

Within the last few months there have been a handful of students that have become involved with our ASCLS-Kansas Promotion of the Profession Committee. These students have helped schedule outreach opportunities, plan fundraisers, and organize society social events. There are also students that have gone with me to present at multiple college functions where we raise awareness of the CLS profession (and hopefully spark an interest in CLS as a career).

I recommend getting in contact with your state's Promotion of the Profession Committee (PPC) to see what resources they can provide for your students. They might be able to assist with scheduling outreach opportunities on campus, or perhaps, with STEM related clubs at your University. If your state does not have an active PPC then maybe that would be something your students could get started...

    I hope this helps!

ASCLS Developing Professional Forum is a group for students! You also might see if there is a student forum on your state society for ASCLS.
