I feel like I am late to the game and perhaps this has been posted in the ASCLS Forum previously, but if you too missed it, I thought I would post a link to the All of Us research project.  This is an NIH funded large, longitudinal study to create a database that will facilitate research progress on personalized medicine.  They aim to enroll 1,000,000 individuals from diverse heritages and they are about 20% there.   Already they have recruited a large percentage of individuals not typically represented in research populations.  They will access your electronic health record (EHR) and may ask for blood and urine samples too.  But they will also return to you any data they collect.

I once met a nurse who had participated in the  Nurses Health Study and I was happy to have the opportunity to thank her.  As health scientists, we can appreciate the value of projects like this.

You can read about it and join at:

I am an All of Us Ambassador for our local research site, so I feel very strongly about all laboratorians participating in this study.  If you are concerned about your personal data, you are recorded as a number and your survey results are stored separately (east coast) from your samples (Mayo).  If you don't want to give samples, please sign up and at least do the surveys.  They can gather great information from family health history, social-economic backgrounds, geographical and under-served populations.  What a great way to say you may have been part of a reason a specific treatment was made available sooner because the clinical trial samples could be pulled from the bio-bank instead of waiting for enough people to enroll in a clinical trial!  The future of health begins with YOU!
