    Greetings everyone,
With the impact of COVID-19 rippling through our regularly scheduled lives, we are now faced with determining new ways to hold recruiting events to attract and hire laboratory personnel and recruit new students for our programs.  I wanted to reach out to everyone and ask what exciting "new" virtual activities or recruiting ideas you may be employing for student recruitment in your programs, and talent acquisition for you facilities. As COVID-19 continues to evolve, we too must evolve and prepare to utilize virtual recruitment strategies. What seems to be working? What's maybe not working so well?............ I look forward to hearing your insights and tactics!

    Hi Phyllis,

This is probably something further into the future, but VR training has a lot of potential.

In early August, CDC DLS launched LabTrainingVR as part of a pilot project with the Center for Preparedness and Response.  Right now, it's only one module on Biosafety Cabinets and limited to an HTC Vive VR headset.  They plan to have another module on PPE by end of 2020.

For students, we sent out a video of the department and pictures, with a summary of what we do in each lab. This is very successful!

For potential new hires, all open positions are posted online in various job sites. Once we identify a potential candidate, HR reaches out, then the managers may have a call or a zoom for interviewing.

Our lab med website also has a listing of the laboratories with pictures and summary information for each lab.

I currently work in Human Resources for a school district so we actually had been recruiting Admin, Teachers and Support Staff. The realms are totally different but I will say using a network of job posting websites and professional HR affiliates within the sate of Ohio for P-12 education. I've really been thrown into the virtual aspect of things as it pertains to talent acquisition. Screening candidates and keeping a steady stream of genuine communication has proven effective. This communication is via email predominantly and once back in the office this occurred via telephone. The similarities between laboratory medicine and P-12 education are that we employ educators that put students first and have to navigate the nuances of recent change in the delivery of educational lessons. This is just keeping y 1 year of experience in Human Resources brief and to the point. I hope this was somewhat helpful.
