ASCLS-OR Leadership Positions

Each constituent society associated with the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) has a board of directors that are elected. Each elected position has specific responsibilities that must be upheld and completed by that official during their time of service. Individuals holding elected positions are responsible for voting on various topics but will consider input from other members of the society during the process. 

Elected Positions

The following positions are elected and hold the power to vote:

President

Serves as the chief executive officer, representing the entire membership and the best interests of the Society. Exercises personal leadership in the motivation of other officers, board members, committee members, and the membership. Influences the establishment of goals and objectives for the Society during the term of office. Acts as spokesman and inspirational leader and takes an important part in monitoring and evaluating organizational performance and effectiveness. The President will be an ex-officio member of all committees of this Society with the exception of elective committees. The President appoints all appointive committee chairs. Within the limits of the Constitution, Bylaws, and SOPs, the President is responsible and has commensurate authority to accomplish the duties set forth in policies and procedures of the Society. The President shall serve as the principle representative, preside at the annual meetings of the General Assembly, and at all meetings of the Board of Directors.

The President shall serve a one-year term or until a successor is elected.

President Elect

Serves as a member of the executive committee assisting the President as directed and becoming familiar with the duties of the office of President. Presides at meetings of the Board of Directors in the absence of the President, reviews SOPs and policies of the Society, and recommends revisions as deemed appropriate. 

The President-elect shall serve a one-year term succeeding to the office of President the year after election.

Secretary

Serves as a member of the executive committee responsible for keeping the meeting minutes for the Board of Directors to include the tracking of all motions and voting. Acts as a collector of reports from the executive boards members and committee chairs, curates an agenda of topics to be discussed during each meeting, and acts as a sergeant of arms, maintaining order during meeting proceedings. Reviews and verifies the minutes and is responsible for maintaining permanent records of all meeting minutes.  

The Secretary shall serve a term of three years or until a successor has been elected.

Treasurer

Serves as a member of the executive committee responsible for the receipt and expenditure of funds by the Society. Participates in the creation of yearly budgets, performs yearly audits to ensure accounting accuracy, and files yearly taxes on behalf of the Society. 

The Treasurer shall serve a term of three years or until a successor has been elected.

Ascending Professional

Serves as a member of the executive committee focused on engaging and informing individuals new to the profession and ASCLS about the various opportunities that membership affords. Facilitate involvement and interest through activities supporting the needs and interests of ascending professional members. Looks to the President and/or President-elect for guidance and mentoring. Aides with the completion of special projects as directed by the President. Ascending professionals must be within their first 5 years following degree completion.

The Ascending Professional shall serve a term of one year succeeding to the position of President-elect.

Developing Professional

Serves as a member of the executive committee responsible for coordinating the involvement and interest of students of clinical laboratory science in the Society. Identifies areas of concern from students and communicates those concerns with the Society helping to create a plan of action. Aides with projects as directed by the President. 

The Developing Professional shall serve a term of one year succeeding to the position of Ascending Professional.

Non-Elected Positions

The following positions are not elected and do not hold the power to vote; however, their contributions and input at board meetings are invaluable. 

Past President

Serves as a mentor to the current president. Remind the president of presidential duties and respond to any questions being presented. Not typically a voting member of the board, the Past President may serve as a voting member in specific circumstances. Aid the board in any task on an as needed basis with the priority to advise, support, and mentor the current president.

Serves as a member of the board responsible for attending board meetings and completing tasks assigned by the president. Conducting business necessary for the functions and performance of the society as directed.

The Director of Scholarships

Serves as the moderator for the Betsy Baptist Scholarship Foundation. Responsible for the collection of scholarship applications and determination of eligibility. Applications that meet eligibility requirements will be further presented to the executive committee and ASCLS members for determination. Once awardees have been selected, the director of scholarships will make contact and organize the distribution of funds with the treasure.
